Found a Wasp Nest on Your Property? Here's What to Do (and Not Do)
If you've spotted a papery grey nest under the eaves, in a wall cavity or underground in the garden, there's a good chance it belongs to the European wasp — an introduced species that has become well established across Sydney over summer and autumn. Unlike native bees, European wasps can sting repeatedly, and colonies can grow to several thousand individuals by late season, making them far more dangerous to disturb than most people expect.
Don't DIY a wasp nest — here's why
Supermarket wasp sprays are designed for a handful of insects on contact, not a defended colony of thousands. Disturbing a nest without the right protective equipment and technique often provokes a mass defensive response, and multiple stings from European wasps can trigger a serious allergic reaction even in people who've never reacted before. We treat wasp nest removal as a job for trained, properly equipped technicians — not a weekend project.
What you can safely do while you wait
- Keep children, pets and visitors well away from the nest area — ideally block off access to that part of the yard.
- Avoid mowing, trimming or gardening near the nest; vibration and noise can provoke wasps even without direct contact.
- Close windows and doors near the nest, especially in the early morning and evening when wasps are most active.
- Don't block or seal the entrance — a trapped, agitated colony is more likely to find another way into the house.
- If anyone is stung and shows signs of a serious reaction (difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, dizziness), treat it as a medical emergency.
How we handle nest removal
Our technicians use protective equipment and targeted treatment to eliminate the nest at the source, including nests that are hidden underground or inside wall cavities — often the hardest to deal with safely without professional equipment. We also check the surrounding property for secondary nests, since it's common to find more than one when conditions have been favourable. Every nest removal job is guaranteed — if activity returns, so do we.
